What this measures
Lip ratio is the height of the lower lip divided by the height of the upper lip. The convention puts it near 1.6 — the same phi that runs through the rest of the classical proportion rules — meaning the lower lip is a little over half again as tall as the upper one. This tool measures both from the vermilion borders in your photo and reports the ratio. Two things are worth knowing before reading much into it. The first is that lip fullness has the widest genuine population spread of anything measured on this site, and varies substantially with ancestry, so the convention describes one narrow reference rather than a norm. The second is that expression dominates the measurement: a slight smile thins the upper lip disproportionately, and a relaxed closed mouth is the only pose where two photographs are comparable.
How to read this
- 1.618 is the classical target. Above it means a fuller lower lip relative to the upper.
- Keep the mouth relaxed and closed. A smile thins the upper lip and inflates the ratio.
- This measurement has the widest real spread on the site and varies substantially with ancestry.
- Lip height is measured at the midline, so an asymmetric mouth is not captured here — the symmetry tool is.
Lower lip height divided by upper lip height.
- Balanced 0 – 1.1
- Upper and lower lip close to the same height.
- Below the convention 1.1 – 1.45
- Lower lip fuller than the upper, but less so than the classical rule.
- Classical 1.45 – 1.8
- Around the 1:1.6 convention.
- Above the convention 1.8 – 4
- Lower lip considerably fuller. Check the mouth was relaxed and closed.
Method
Every measurement here comes from 478 facial landmarks detected by Google's MediaPipe face mesh, running as WebAssembly in your browser. The face is levelled by the eye line before anything is measured, and every distance is normalised so the result does not depend on your camera or how close you stood to it.
Questions
What is the ideal lip ratio?
The classical answer is 1:1.6, lower to upper. It comes from the same phi convention as the rest of the golden-ratio rules and has the same weak evidential basis — it describes one aesthetic reference, not a measured preference.
Why does my lip ratio change between photos?
Expression. Even a slight smile stretches and thins the upper lip while the lower one changes less, which pushes the ratio up. Photographs are only comparable when the mouth is relaxed and closed in both.
Can lip ratio be improved naturally?
Not meaningfully. Hydration and lip care affect how full lips look at the margins, but the vermilion height is anatomical. Anything that changes it materially is a clinical procedure and outside what this tool or the app addresses.
